4. BASIC RULES OF INDUCTION HARDENING

  • Power adjusts temperature
    • Higher power results in higher temperature, and some increase of hardening depth
  • Time/scan speed adjusts hardening dept.
    • Longer heating time/lower scan speed increases hardening depth, with some increase in temperature
  • Uneven surface hardening
    • If there are problems with ”soft spots”, the problem is with the quenching process
  • Adequate hardening layer
    • Dedicated inductor geometry
    • Electromagnetic flux orientation with concentrators

  • Computer simulation of the hardening process electromagnetic-thermal evolution in the workpiece
  • Design of the inductor and quench-ring, based on the computer simulation and experience
  • Programming of the hardening parameters and testing
  • Laboratory measurement and analysis of the hardening samples, checking the results by routines for analyzing the hardening quality:
    • Surface Hardening
    • Microhardness on hardened layer
